Don’t suffer the January Blues

2018 has finally arrived, the festive season has been wrapped up and put away for another year and it’s now time to focus on YOU.

New goals and new resolutions have been set and it’s time to start planning an exciting new year ahead – holidays, special birthdays, date nights and family time will all be valuable moments to cherish and enjoy.

Whether it’s a weekend staycation, a date night, family day out or a night out to celebrate; the Surrey Hills offer such beauty and we often forget about some of the enjoyable and exciting things we can do right here in our back-yard, so don’t let the January Blues get hold of you. Get out and enjoy the plethora of activities and attractions in and around us.

For the kids:

If you’ve got little ones (or grandkids) and you’re wanting them to burn off as much energy as possible on a great day out, there’s a ton of activities out there! For the younger ones, why not take them to Bocketts Farm, it’s soon to be the lambing season plus they have great activities both inside and out to keep the kids happy. Wildwood Treetop Adventures is another great day out for both young and old.  Experience the thrill of negotiating rope bridges, wobbly crossings and zip wires high up in the trees like a modern-day Tarzan. All the time perfectly safe as you are continuously connected to the safety wire of their ‘saferoller’ system.  No tedious unclipping and clipping back on, you will be free to enjoy the treetop obstacles safe and unhindered. Pottery painting is a terrific and relaxing way to while away a few hours. Grayshott Pottery, just a few minutes away, is offering drop-in slots throughout half-term.  Alternatively, Alice Holt has just launched its brand new forest trail, focusing on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s book The Highway Rat.  Follow the panels, complete activities and interact with the forest as you head on a journey with The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story. Don’t forget to wrap up warm, pack some snacks and take the kids bikes to make a day of it!

For the grown ups:

If you’re preferring some adult time-out, head to The Guildford Ski Slope and brush up on your skiing and snowboarding skills – private lessons start from £50.  Fancy a day out learning more about local gin brand, Silent Pool… They run a terrific 90-minute gin tour, which takes an intricate look at their unique production of handcrafted spirits, which finishes with a tasting of their full range of products, including their award-winning gin in addition to their gin-based fruit cordials. Did you know Silent Pool formulate, distil and bottle their award-winning liqueurs right here in the Surrey Hills?! Alternatively, if you’re keen to wrap up and get outdoors into the fresh air for a lovely walk, you have a multitude of choices here in the Surrey Hills, but our favourite is Waggoners Wells, a National Trust property that is simply beautiful during all seasons (and free parking).

Whisk your other half away on a romantic escape

Fancying a weekend away with your Valentine? We have some great offers here at The Stag on the River.  Enjoy delicious sharing boards, a glass of bubbles and perhaps your favourite red wine… and make a night of it by snuggling up in our fluffy dressing gowns and finishing the night off with a board-game or two in one of our beautiful 7 en-suite bedrooms.

This January we have lots of enticing dishes to warm you up and keep the cold at bay, including steak and St. Peter’s dark ale pie to butternut squash and sage risotto. Every day we have daily specials, which is Chef’s opportunity to utilise an array of local and in-season produce… so don’t forget to check the special’s board before you place your order!
